YES supporters are being urged to tune up their vocal cords and get on their way to record a Proclaimers classic to Sing4Scotland in time for an independence rally in Inverness at the end of this month.

In what is being described as a “massive online mass-aoke”, United 4 Yes are urging Facebook friends to singalong with Craig and Charlie Reid and submit their efforts for a choir-like finale video.

The song they’re being asked to record is I’m on my Way, from the Proclaimers’ Sunshine on Leith album.

Carol McNamara, from United 4 Yes, told The National: “We were very kindly given permission by The Proclaimers via their manager to use one of their tracks, and we opted for I’m On My Way.

“The idea is that people send us their recording over the summer and our volunteer recording engineer will lay all of the recordings we receive onto a single track – giving us the effect of a choir.

“It’s a singalong with The Proclaimers – to help keep good timing for the final version.

“It is important that people record their own version wearing headphones and save as an mp3 file.

“Kenny, from The Proclaimers’ management company has supplied the backing track for our finalised version.

“We’re hoping to encourage anyone and everyone who can to participate – we’re thinking of independence supporters who can’t make other events perhaps for health reasons, work commitments or because they live abroad.”

McNamara said it was also hoped to produce a video of the final version, including a mass contribution from the Inverness march and rally, which is happening next weekend.

She added: “With the final video in mind we’ve also requested the organisers of the Inverness march to have it played on July 28 at their rally – and I believe they’ve taken it one step further and are organising lyric sheets for the crowd.”
