INDEPENDENCE supporters are taking to the roads today for a gathering in Inverness in the latest of a series of summer marches and rallies the length and breadth of Scotland.

The events have been labelled All Under One Banner (AUOB) and involve several campaign groups, such as United 4 Yes and – making their first appearance at Inverness – Sing4Scotland, who are filming a “mass-aoke” of The Proclaimers’ hit I’m On My Way.

As The National revealed just over a week ago, the groups are urging their Facebook friends to sing along with Craig and Charlie Reid and record their vocal versions online.

Once the contributions are collated and edited, they will be included in a choir-like finale which will be used as the basis of the soundtrack for a video to be recorded at today’s gathering.

The National:

All the summer independence events are aimed at uniting Yes groups from across the country.

Carole McNamara, from United 4 Yes, told The National it was working.

“If you speak to anybody from any Yes groups they will tell you they are growing and new ones emerging,” she said.

“Smaller groups are moving into regional groups and sharing more information and these rallies are a huge way of uniting them because there’s a lot of contacts and networking being done.

“It’s impossible to say how many people will be in Inverness for today’s march and rally, but what I do is listen to the BBC, treble the number they report and then add a zero – that’s usually fairly accurate.”

Karen Jamieson, from Sing4Scotland, said there had been a “very positive” response to her call for individuals and other groups to have a go at the Proclaimers’ song from their album Sunshine on Leith.

She said: “After The National published the story, recordings started to come in on the same day – almost immediately – and they’re great fun.

“The only problem is the recording engineer says his brain’s getting a wee bit frazzled listening to the same song over and over again.

The National:

“He is getting there, but he’s got the whole summer to get through and the video we’re recording today is just one part of it.”

McNamara added: “Another part is we want to network with all the Yes groups and possibly go out to see some of them to record some videos with them.

“Then we could link all the videos together.

“So we’re more than happy if any Yes groups want to invite us along to record them. They can get in touch through Facebook.”

McNamara said today’s recording of the mass rally singing I’m On My Way was a major part of a bigger project.

“We’ll get one good copy with clips of the best bits of all the videos together and all the voices, so we can have a ‘choir’ of thousands.

“We will get a video of the whole song in Inverness with the crowd and most of it will be used in the final version, which will also include the recordings that people are sending in to us – they can be as inventive as they like and let’s just have a bit of fun.”

Both of the groups can be contacted through Facebook, submissions will be accepted via sing4scotland@gmail.com and detailed instructions for recording and submitting your choral contributions can be found online via this link.
