THE postbox at the heart of a row in the Argyllshire town of Dunoon has been replaced, The National can report.

On Saturday we told how the Dunoon Observer had highlighted the upset caused by the installation of a new postbox in the town’s Alexandra Parade.

That box was emblazoned with the insignia “EIIR” for Queen Elizabeth II, and most Scots are aware that there was never a Queen Elizabeth I in Scotland.

It was a major issue in the mid-1950s when the then General Post Office (GPO) brought in EIIR branded boxes in Scotland and they were vandalised in what became known as the Pillar or Post Box wars.

The GPO eventually brought in a special Scottish cypher to mark all postboxes in Scotland, and that has been in use for more than 60 years.

For some reason, however, the new Dunoon box contained the insignia that is only used south of the Border.

Local resident Colin Stevenson was one of numerous people angered by the postbox and he contacted the press.

The Royal Mail said the Dunoon postbox had been installed in “error” with a spokesperson saying the company is “proud of our uniquely Scottish cypher.”

The Dunoon Observer has been keeping an eagle eye on developments and informed The National yesterday that the offending postbox cover had indeed been replaced.
