A NEW Yes group is to bring the independence message to the people of Elgin.
Yes Elgin was formed at the beginning of the summer, inspired by the work of other Yes groups in Scotland.
The group had its first day out campaigning on the Plainstones in Elgin on Saturday and has a social night planned for October 12 which organisers said be “a launch event to bring more people together around the cause”.
Mark Piggott, Yes Elgin’s Vice Convener, said: “The group came together early summer enthused by the mass of Yes groups reforming around the country.
“We marched together at an Inverness rally where we spoke with some of the more active groups in the area and made further plans.”
The group is still looking for a venue in Elgin but has focused on having a regular stall until it finds one.
“We initially looked at a hub in the town but after not finding anything suitable, we concentrated on getting a regular stall out to engage people”, Piggott said.
He added: “There is traditionally a large Yes leaning population in Moray, and coupled with a lot of disenchanted people who were in favour of maintaining the union we feel there’s a lot of potential Yes voters out there for #indyref2.
“We plan to join with Yes activists all over Moray and lend our support to campaigning in Buckie, Keith and Forres as well as holding regular stalls in Elgin until #indyref2 is won.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
