The National:

STEPHEN Flynn has been named the “hardest politician in the UK” by a current affairs magazine.

The SNP’s Westminster leader has impressed at Prime Minister’s Questions since he seized power from Ian Blackford in December last year and is even tipped by some as a possible future party leader.

But he has now picked up a rather unexpected accolade as he was named by the humorous current affairs magazine The Fence as Britain’s hardest politician.

Hacks who supported his nomination told the magazine: “I wouldn’t wanna mess with him.

“He's very nice but I imagine he could be brutal. Got a smirk, always. Also, have you seen his wife’s name? Because you’d have to be hard to stop people taking the piss.”

Flynn’s wife is called Lynn Flynn and the London-based mag added: “You can’t have a wife named Lynn Flynn and not be a hard bastard.”

He beat “noted hard men” Dominic Raab and Johnny Mercer to the top spot.

Labour's Angela Rayner and Clive Lewis were awarded bronze medals.
