AN angry voter disrupted a Liberal Democrat campaign visit to confront leader Tim Farron over his position on Brexit.
Pensioner Malcolm Baker told Farron voters “did know” what they were voting for in the EU referendum and accused him of believing Leave supporters were racist. The party leader was in the middle of a television interview in Kidlington, near Oxford, when the 65-year-old took him to task over his position on the EU. Baker said voters “do know, we did know” what they were backing in the referendum.
When Farron insisted he did not believe Leave voters were racist, he replied: “Yes, you do. I tell you what, you keep going on all the time...”
Farron questioned the disgruntled voter about whether he was proud his grandchildren “would inherit a poorer, less powerful, less secure country”.
“I’m proud that they will be coming out of Europe and that we will have our own destiny and not have people telling us we are going to pay £100 billion to get out,” Baker replied.
“If that’s your policies I hope you are going to get six seats.”
Baker added: “I have always voted Labour but I will be voting for Theresa May.”
He later said: “I’m fed up of hearing this chap keeping on running Britain down.”
Farron said Baker had only voted for Britain’s departure, not the final deal. “He didn’t vote for destination, he wasn’t asked,” Farron said. “None of us were asked.”
Baker’s mind is surely made up.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
