Richard Fahey moved within touching distance of setting a new record for number of winners in a calendar year when Hold On Magnolia prevailed in a photo finish for the 32RedSport.com Nursery Handicap at Wolverhampton.
The Malton handler is now on the 232-winner mark for 2015, while Richard Hannon senior is currently the holder of the best total with 235 in 2013.
Fahey will be well represented at Wolverhampton on Boxing Day in a bid to catch the now-retired Hannon, but he might regret not having any entries at Chelmsford on Sunday.
Hold On Magnolia was not particularly well fancied and was sent off at 10-1 under David Nolan, an unsung hero of the Fahey team.
It was only in the very last strides that Hold On Magnolia looked like getting up and the winning margin was a nose from Mysterious Look.
The fact Fahey has a chance of setting a new figure was first brought to his attention by The Times' racing correspondent Alan Lee, who sadly died at the weekend, aged 61.
"I wasn't aware I was anywhere near in with a chance until Alan Lee flagged it up a few months ago, God rest his soul," said Fahey.
"It's not something I set out to achieve, but the fact we're now in touching distance we'll give it a good go.
"In all honesty I didn't think I had the ammunition to keep us ticking over through the winter, but we've had three winners over the last few days and we're inching closer.
"Listen, if you were to ask me what chance I thought we had of breaking it I'd say we were long odds against, but we'll have a good go.
"We need a few outsiders to win, a bit like this one today."
Tom Dascombe's Seve bounced back to form in the Download The New Unibet Racing App Handicap.
A winner at Sandown in July, he was back down to the same handicap mark under Martin Harley and having broke smartly from a good draw he never saw another rival.
Sent off the complete outsider at 18-1, he had two-and-a-quarter lengths to spare over Pensax Lad and as a three-year-old he could still turn out to be a decent sprinter.
Clive Cox's Go On Go On Go On was probably the most promising winner on the card in the 32Red Casino Maiden Fillies' Stakes.
Second on debut at Kempton, the Medicean filly was sent off as the 2-1 favourite to go one better.
Godolphin's Mondial hassled her all the way up the straight but the market leader forged a length and three-quarters clear on crossing the line.
Richard Hughes and Shane Kelly continue to prove they will be a force to be reckoned with in 2016.
Working with limited stock, Hughes registered his ninth winner since retiring from riding when Believe It (5-2 favourite) was coaxed home by Kelly to win the second division of the Coral Casino Handicap.
Since moving to his current base at Upper Lambourn, Hughes is operating at a strike-rate of over 30 per cent.
The first division went the way of Dandys Perier (16-1) for Ron Harris and George Downing.
John Gosden's Always Welcome finally opened his account in the 32Red.com Maiden Stakes.
Second on all three previous outings, the George Strawbridge-owned Elusive Quality colt returned as the 6-4 favourite.
Rab Havlin kept things simple and made all, coming home a length and a quarter clear of War Glory.
