Folsom Blue is "less likely than likely" to run in the Coral Scottish Grand National following his luckless run in Monday's Irish version.

Since being bought for just £21,000 by a syndicate which includes At The Races presenter Gary O'Brien, Gordon Elliott has worked wonders with the 11-year-old.

Many observers felt he would have won the Fairyhouse showpiece but for being broadsided at the final fence, almost being brought to a standstill before running on again to pass the post fifth – later promoted to fourth – behind stablemate General Principle.

Folsom Blue was named as one of 78 entries for this year's Scottish National on April 21, but looks odds against to make an appearance at Ayr.

"I've watched it back a few times and it wasn't just a bump he got, he could see the others coming towards him and he jumped the fence almost from a standstill," said O'Brien.

"There was a camera angle as they swung into the straight which picked him up and I felt then that if he jumped the last three well, he wouldn't be far away because we know how well he stays.

"He'd been hampered early on and lost his confidence which meant he jumped slow and was a bit further back than ideal. He must be so tough to get where he did.

"Fair play to the winner, though, he showed real guts to get up right on the line."

He added: "Our lad is fine after it, Gordon says, which is the main thing, but whether he goes for the Scottish National, I'm not sure.

"He's entered, but everything will have to be right for him to run, the ground and weight.

"I'd say as this stage it's less likely than likely and if he doesn't run, he can go out in the field."

Even if Folsom Blue does not make the trip, Elliott could still have a leading contender in the shape of Fagan, while the Paul Nicholls-trained Vicente is in line to become the first horse to win three consecutive Scottish Nationals in more than 100 years.

The nine-year-old may attempt to follow in the hoofprints of Couvrefeu II, who was the last horse to complete the hat-trick between 1911 and 1913.

Nigel Twiston-Davies has a strong hand with ante-post favourite Ballyoptic joined by last year's second and third, Cogry and Benbens.

Colin Tizzard has five entries including Sizing Tennessee, while Lucinda Russell will attempt to win the race for the first time with Big River.

Other leading contenders include Warren Greatrex's Kim Muir hero Missed Approach and Beware The Bear, one of three hopefuls for Nicky Henderson.
