THREE people died and more than a dozen others were injured when a tour bus and a city bus collided in New York City’s Queens district.

The New York Police Department said one person died at the scene of the crash which happened at 6.15am local time yesterday (11.15am BST). Two other people died later in hospital. Some of the injured were in a critical condition.

One of the dead was a pedestrian, discovered trapped underneath one of the buses, one was a passenger on the city bus, and the third was the driver of the charter bus, the authorities said during a news conference at the crash site, in the Flushing area.

Firefighters put out a blaze in a building hit by one of the buses.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said: “We’ve had a really tragic morning here in Flushing. It’s shocking to see the scene – the sheer destruction from the impact of this collision.”
