IN this week's video column, Lesley Riddoch talks about who knows better about what to do with housing, the community or the council.

She highlights a community looking to buyout an area of derelict land in Maryhill known as "The Valley".

The area is somewhat famous due to its use as a filming location for the Scottish comedy Still Game and was great for their filming because it was so derelict.

In January of this year, Glasgow City Council announced it would be selling the land to commercial house-builders to create around 100 low-cost homes.

Lesley says: "That really riled local people because a lot of them felt land that was public should stay public and the housing equally should stay public.

"They wanted to keep that land and have really advanced housing there and be more imaginative than anything the council was coming up with."

During an occupation of the land by residents, a number of options were suggested for "eco-housing" by the community.

The sale of the land has since been cancelled by the council, but the locals fear it may go up again and there is some tricky legislation to get through when trying to buy the land as a community.

There will be an event this Sunday, November 7, where members of the surrounding communities will be invited to register their interest in the community buyout. A few thousand local people will need to show interest for this buyout to happen.
