IF we cannot afford to build social housing for rent, would it not be possible for the Scottish Government to contract large builders, like Barratt for example, to build houses for rent on their behalf?

These could be financed by the monthly rent being collected by local councils and forwarded monthly to the builder for a set number of years. The houses would be maintained by the councils and would revert to the council after, say, a period of 20 years.
The Scottish Government could be the ultimate guarantor of this scheme. This would allow us to maintain our youth in remote communities, as they would not have to move away and could help staff the hotels, care homes and local hospitals!

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
