THANK you for that lovely article concerning Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (May 22). If I may, I’d like to bring another aspect of Doyle to light, so as to offset the “spiritualist” and “ethereal” tag.

He loved sport. He boxed, played football and cricket, once apparently even bowling out WC Grace, but his love of golf is what I want to share.

He was instrumental in designing the golf course at Jasper Park in Canada around 1914, but ten years before that he and some of his golfing pals bought land in Surrey, on the edge of the “Devil’s Punchbowl”, and helped design the beautiful Hindhead Golf Course, of which he became the first president.

I was thrilled to once be a member there, as was the late great Peter Alliss and, so I am told, Doyle even got David Lloyd George to join the club!

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was, alongside Scott, one of Scotland’s great writers, known throughout the world, and yet in Scotland there is no statue in honour of the man.
