WITH the Olympics fast approaching I thought readers might be interested to know that Scotland has previously competed in its own right at the 1908 Olympics (in hockey) and the 1912 Olympics (in cycling), and even won a bronze medal in 1908.

It is theoretically possible for Scotland to establish a National Olympic Committee and enter a team again. The IOC requires teams competing at the Olympics to have five or more affiliations with recognised international federations. Scotland is affiliated with badminton, basketball, boxing, curling, football, hockey, table tennis, volleyball and weightlifting, so already meets this requirement.

Potentially, all it would take then is some political or sporting will to get Scotland competing at the Olympics again!
