THE SNP's Westminster leader Ian Blackford has said the events of the last two years have intensified the need for an independent Scotland during a passionate House of Commons speech.
New Year but the same old from the @GOVUK No progress on the Withdrawal agreement, the PM couldn't even be bothered turning up to Parliament. @jeremycorbyn must get off the fence and help the @theSNP bring down this inept Gov. The need for Independence is stark. pic.twitter.com/wAPeBNfdka

In his address, Blackford pointed out that MPs had returned from their Christmas break to find the Government had made no further progress on the Withdrawl Agreement – with just days to go until the already delayed "meaningful" vote.
The MP for Ross, Skye and Lochaber then backed comments made by Nicola Sturgeon earlier today.

“The First Minister of Scotland was very clear today, that the events of the last few years have made the case for Scotland being an independent country; in charge of our own destiny. Mr Speaker Scotland will not be dragged out of the European Union against its will.
"Our Parliament’s powers are being eroded. The UK Government is treating the Scottish Government with contempt. Even when we seek compromise our voice, Scotland’s voice, is side-lined. This Government should wake up to the reality, Scotland knows who is leading in our interest and Mr Speaker, it is not the Government in Westminster”.
Independence supporters online were pleased to hear the case made so clear in Westminster.
The Tories have ruined the UK. Future generations won’t have the opportunities we’ve had. Scotland must be freed from this shameful situation#DissolveTheUnion

In the speech Blackford also hit out at Theresa May for failing to attend the first day back in Parliament, saying: "We’re just now days away from the deadline to get a deal to protect our economy, and the Prime Minister isn’t in Parliament to explain her lack of progress.

"Why is the Prime Minister not responding to this urgent question? It’s now clear beyond doubt that the Prime Minister’s tactic is to run down the clock and deprive Parliament of any alternative to her Brexit proposals."
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
