HIT show Spitting Image is set to return to our screens 23 years after it first aired – and this time the audience will be global.
The series is preparing for a comeback with a grotesque looking Donald Trump, whose anus composes his tweets, and Vladimir Putin in the garb of a sadomasochist.
The US and Russian presidents will be joined by a Meghan Markle puppet resplendent in a “princess” t-shirt, accompanied by a doting Prince Harry.
They will replace the mannish caricature of former UK prime minister Margaret Thatcher and the doddery image of erstwhile US President Ronald Regan as the stars of the show.
A pilot has already been made and talks are ongoing with networks over the new series, which was watched by 15 million people every week at the height of its popularity.
Co-creator Roger Law said the current state of the world had forced him out of semi-retirement to bring the much-loved programme back as a “public service satire”.
“It’s pretty chaotic out there. As far as I’m concerned, it’s better than shouting at the television set, isn’t it? So I thought, let’s give it a go,” he told the Guardian.
The Trump puppet, he added, was an “absolute monster”.
“I’ve heard other satirists say that he’s un-satirisable because he’s a satire in himself. Well, with puppets you can go much, much further, because actors won’t do that for you. And by Christ, we are going to give it a go.”
It’s likely that UK politicians who are less well known outside Britain could be spared the merciless lampooning, however.
“If you’re going to go after the bastards, you may as well go after the biggest bastards there are, hence America,” said Law.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
