IN 2019, SNP MP Alyn Smith made a speech telling the EU to "leave a light on for Scotland". Since then the hashtag #LeaveALightOnForScotland has taken off.
Following the UK's departure from the EU last night, the phrase has seen a massive surge in use and we've been keeping track at The National.
Here are our favourite tweets showcasing Scotland's desire to be part of something bigger ...
Scots gathered outside Holyrood
Huge crowd outside the Scottish Parliament making pretty clear what they think of Brexit. A bit of hope on a sad day! #LeaveALightOnForScotland #indyref2 #Brexit pic.twitter.com/I8pKrq2SdN

Scotland is a place for everyone
You can take a Scot out of Europe but you can never take Europe out of a Scot. It is about listening to the overall Scottish choice to find a road back to the Europe we love. Independence seems the only way.#LeaveALightOnForScotland https://t.co/T6vVoKYTG9

Great to see it spreading beyond political views
Some from last nights #LeaveALightOnForScotland Aberdeen thing. I’m not pro-independence and would never vote to leave the UK, but I am pro-EU and so it seemed like the right place to be at the moment the country crashed out. 🤷♂️ 💙💛💙#loveunions #fucknationalism pic.twitter.com/iLYZ5HY26n

We will join them soon!
I cried last night in the light of a right wing government bringing the UK to where we are. However I am positive in the light of Scottish independence coming soon and rejoining the EU family. 🏴🏴🇪🇺🇪🇺#brexit #LeaveALightOnForScotland #indyref2 #indyref2020

Scots are a friendly and wholesome bunch
These guys in Glasgow last night were so dejected about leaving the EU, you can see and sense how upset they are. @Stina2017 went back and gave the Portuguese man a massive hug 🏴💙🇪🇺#LeaveALightOnForScotland #BrexitDay

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
