THE First Minister has revealed that the number of coronavirus deaths in Scotland has risen by four to 14.
Nicola Sturgeon added that there are now 499 confirmed cases in the country too.
Sturgeon called on shops selling non-essential goods to close now, and added guidelines on what counts as essential and non-essential are being drawn up now.
Speaking at today's press briefing, Scotland's Chief Medical Officer Catherine Calderwood said the 14 deaths probably represent 1000 people infected by each case.
Calderwood added that the 23 people currently in intensive care likely represent around 400-500 people who have become infected through each of them.
The First Minister confirmed the measures currently being taken, including the closures of bars, restaurants and other spaces and social distancing advice, will be in place for 12 weeks in the first instance.
She urged patients who need additional information to dial NHS 24 on 111 rather than contact their GP moving forwards.
More to follow.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
