A GLASGOW restaurant owner has pledged to send scores of carry-out chicken curry meals to nurses in the city during the coronavirus pandemic.
Indian restaurant owner Sohan Singh has made the commitment to feed staff on the frontline at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital every Saturday and Sunday until the health crisis is over.
The owner of the Bukharah restaurant and the Lorne Hotel on Sauchiehall Street has also been providing hot meals to homeless people who have been taken off the streets by the Simon Community homeless charity.
The nurses have told of their appreciation towards public support during the crisis.
One nurse, who enjoyed her meal on the nightshift, said: “Everyone loved the food and it gave us a well-needed boost to get through the nightshift.
“Tokens of support like this and support in general are very well received.
“The clapping for NHS staff on a Thursday night shows real solidarity and humanity.
“It is humbling for a lot of nurses and staff as they are putting themselves on the frontline to protect the lives of others, which is something they do every day.
“During this pandemic, the risk is very much higher and what everyone in the country needs to do to really support the NHS is keep social distancing and stay home.”
Singh added: “We should all play our part and do what we can to help people during this terrible coronavirus pandemic.
“I’m very fortunate that I am in a position to help others and I must do this to be a good citizen.
“I want to pay tribute to the incredible nurses, doctors and other hospital staff who are putting their own wellbeing at risk to look after patients suffering from coronavirus.
“The least I can do is give them a tasty Indian curry to enjoy during their meal breaks.”
Singh, whose family also own the Artto Hotel and the Bombay Blues restaurant in Glasgow, added: “This is not just a one-off.
“You could say I’m going the full Bhoona and I’ll provide as many hot meals as needed to the homeless and the hospital staff every weekend until this crisis is over.”
