IF there’s one thing British nationalists hate, it’s nationalism.
The thought of Scotland having dominion over itself is deeply offensive to them. Indeed they abhor all types of nationalism, apart from the British kind, naturally.
This British exceptionalism has come to the fore once again as Boris Johnson visits Scotland.
The Tory leader, who hasn’t exactly endeared himself to Scots, is being met by a welcome party of pro-independence campaigners as he touches down in Orkney to “promote the Union”.

Such acts of defiance against the noble Prime Minister appall Scottish Tory onlookers, who of course are the most fervent anti-nationalists of the lot.
Proving his anti-nationalist credentials, Highlands & Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston tweeted: “Orkney decisively rejected nationalism in 2014, is the most pro-Union part of Scotland and the Prime Minister is very welcome here today.”

The only slight hitch with the Tory’s rejection of nationalism was that it was plastered with symbols of British nationalism.
This fact was not lost on University of Glasgow academic Paul James Cardwell.

Bit it didn’t take a professor to notice the hypocrisy.
Nothing remotely nationalist about that picture https://t.co/e9jXEt4kz6

How can these people *seriously* think they are ‘anti-nationalist’ when the include a photo like this in the same image https://t.co/DTlgG4Ki83

SNP MSP James Dornan added: "Thanks for highlighting the fact that your glorious leader couldn’t find a place on the mainland where he would be welcome Jamie."

Others pointed out that the islanders may no longer be so fond of the Union, or indeed the Tories.

Orkney also broke 63% remain. I’m sure you’ll be raising that with him, too. https://t.co/cLaizaaQo5

It seems your rejection if nationalism needs a bit of work, Jamie.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
