LIZ Truss has sparked backlash after talks between the UK and Japan over a post- Brexit trade deal were stalled because she insisted on bringing Stilton cheese into the negotiations.
Both sides came close to an agreement in London last week, with the end of August said to be a possibility.
But the UK’s International Trade Secretary calling for Stilton cheese to be added to the final version of the deal to prove the agreement will better than the current arrangement between the EU and Japan.
According to the Financial Times, Truss said this deal would be a "symbolic win" for the UK, despite the fact only £102,000 out of the £18 million worth of blue cheese exported globally last year went to Japan.
The EU and Japan forged a deal last year, which would see the 29 per cent tariffs on hard cheeses phased out by the year 2033 but there will only be duty-free access by that year on an agreed tariff for blue-veined cheese, such as stilton.
Truss is passionate about British cheese’s place in international markets. In a bizarre speech to the Tory party conference in 2014, she said that Britain’s trade deficit in cheese was “a disgrace”.
The FT article also revealed that UK Government figures show that a “modelled” trade deal with Japan would only add 0.07% to Britain’s GDP in the long term, compared with the loss of 5 per cent of GDP growth associated with the UK leaving the EU single market and customs union.
Truss’s stance sparked fury on social media.

Brexit is trying to sell Stilton to the Japanese because we made it harder to sell it to Europeans.

Ok. I wasn't expecting Stilton to be the stalling point in a deal with Japan.

Was this stopped to be our trump card?
So, will we end up with exactly the same as the EU got plus Stilton and Bacon... Worth Brexiting for? https://t.co/e9blRVCSPN

Liz Truss wants better access to Japanese market for Stilton cheese (exports of which total a princely £100k a year) so she can say we got a better deal than the EUhttps://t.co/IPgt41Dchp

Is this actually real?
The only obstacle I see here is the useless Liz Truss.

As far as I know, a lot of Japanese people are lactose intolerant & rarely have dairy in their diet. Liz Truss, this is a non-starter, « get a grip”. BBC News - Stilton drives wedge between UK-Japan Brexit deal https://t.co/LEl3zSppzS

I suppose this is karma; I’ve taken the mickey out of Liz Truss several times about her cheese importing is a disgrace speech. She’s now got a minute taste of power and she’s using it to eff up our lives in return #stilton

Liz Truss said. “We import two thirds of our cheese. That is a disgrace.” Now she won’t agree a trade deal with Japan because they don’t want to buy Stilton from us. Liz Truss is the Secretary of State for International Trade. Anyone concerned by what she says about cheese? https://t.co/Xl80W90ylR

As much as I love Stilton why are they risking the only major trade deal so far? Liz Truss bizarrely demands that Stilton is part of a post-Brexit trade deal with Japan https://t.co/bKe2SE3DaC

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
