MORE than 600 students are self-isolating after a “significant outbreak” of coronavirus was detected at Glasgow University.

Now 124 students have tested positive for Covid-19 – but the institution says the number of those infected is “likely to be higher”.

Scotland’s national clinical director Professor Jason Leitch says he is “very concerned” about the outbreaks, which are centred on two halls of residence in the city.

The university has said the Murano Street and Cairncross accommodation blocks are involved and the infections have been linked to social activity at the start of Freshers Week.

In a statement the university said: "The total number of reported cases since the start of term is 124 but the actual number is likely to be higher.

"Over 600 students are isolating across all residences. We are not aware of any students who have had to receive hospital treatment."

Any students found to be breaking coronavirus rules will face disciplinary action such as the termination of their accommodation contracts and suspension from the university, they added.

Meanwhile, a University of Glasgow student spoke out about his “regrets” after attending parties.

Speaking to LBC, the student said they believed they picked up Covid-19 during Freshers Week “as there was some form of social event or party going on somewhere every night”.

He continued: "I went to some of them - even if they were just big gatherings outside - but with me personally now end up getting Covid-19... I would feel worse about if I'd given it somebody who would suffer more from the virus than just me having it.

"In regards to parties, I do regret going to as many as I did, but I think the attitude was that it was kind of inevitable, we were going to end up with it at some point.

"It's completely changed - there's nothing going on a night at all - I think nearly every flat in my block is isolating now."
