THE way the Scottish Tories’ attacks on the Government in Edinburgh have been going recently one has to wonder if they have many uninjured feet left to shoot themselves in.
They started today in grand fashion, attacking the Scottish Government’s press release for referring to the “AstraZeneca vaccine”. It should, Maurice Golden MSP says, be the “Oxford-AstraZeneca Vaccine”.
This, Golden assures us, is what the “rest of the world knows it as”. Unfortunately for Golden, and Jackson Carlaw and all the others who leaped to condemn the Oxford omission, it seems the UK Government has done the exact same thing…
Then there’s Douglas Ross, who went into fits of fury at Scottish Government messaging which he saw to be promoting independence, only to have it pointed out that UK Government messaging was doing the precise opposite. Well, the precise same thing but on the opposite side. Not very confusing really, but apparently too confusing for Ross to grasp.

Then there was the news of the “extra £375 million” being generously handed back to Scotland by the multi-millionaire we all pay taxes to, Rishi Sunak.
This new, extra funding was, it turned out, neither of those things.
Even the UK Government admitted as much, quietly changing its own press release overnight. Now, instead of saying the money is “on top of” the increased funding already guaranteed, that release states that the £375m will “contribute to” that already guaranteed cash.
So, have the Scottish Tories shown the same, albeit slight, grace? Will they be amending their proclamations of generosity and "extra" cash for Scotland? No. They won’t. We asked them.
So, let’s have a look at all the Scottish Tories who are happy to let their statements stand.

The Chancellor steps up again.
— Scottish Conservatives (@ScotTories) January 5, 2021
It is vital that the SNP gets this funding out to businesses immediately. Too many have been left waiting with jobs and livelihoods hanging in the balance. https://t.co/nKiyqWpURs
The Scottish Conservatives' official Twitter feed shared this post, which was then retweeted by Tory MSPs Annie Wells, Dean Lockhart, and Miles Briggs. Tory councillor Thomas Kerr and the Glasgow Tory group page also got in on the action.
2:
More very welcome news for Scotland as the Chancellor moves quickly to provide an extra £375m to support businesses. SNP must get every penny out to businesses immediately and not sit on the cash as a contingency. https://t.co/iZNu0sOJeZ
— Dean Lockhart MSP (@DeanLockhartMSP) January 5, 2021
Dean Lockhart insisted the SNP get "every penny out immediately". Shame it turned out there aren't even two coppers to rub together.
3:
Very welcome news for Scotland - an extra £375m to support businesses affected by lockdown measures. The SNP must get this extra funding out the door immediately - for many businesses their survival depends on it. https://t.co/JHxbmCnYyl
— Douglas Ross MP (@Douglas4Moray) January 5, 2021
The leader himself (of the Scottish Tories at least, he still reports to Boris Johnson down in London of course). Ross tweeted that "for many businesses their survival depends on" this "extra" money. Since it turns out not exist, will he be lobbying the UK Government for more given how vital it is? Fat chance.
This contribution was retweeted by loyal followers including former leaders Jackson Carlaw and Ruth Davidson, Jamie Halcro Johnston MSP, councillor Thomas Kerr and the Glasgow contingent, and Chief Secretary to the Treasury Steve Barclay. Now he at least should have known better.
4:
.@RishiSunak has announced an additional £375 million for Scotland.
— Scottish Conservatives (@ScotTories) January 5, 2021
Throughout the pandemic, the UK Government has taken decisive action to protect nearly a million jobs and tens of thousands of businesses across Scotland.
The SNP must get this funding out the door now. pic.twitter.com/PlGfUgaKk7
The Scottish Conservatives again. Proving that a Tory is never content with being wrong just the once.
This was retweeted by MSPs Donald Cameron, Halcro Johnston, and Miles Briggs. Holyrood candidate Susan Webber joined in too, as did Tom Tugendhat, the Tory MP for Tonbridge and Malling.
5:
🚨 Chancellor @RishiSunak has announced an additional £375m for the Scottish Government to support Scottish businesses through this lockdown.
— Andrew Bowie MP (@AndrewBowie_MP) January 5, 2021
🚨 On top of Furlough Extension and SEISS grants to support the self employed to April.
🇬🇧🏴 Supporting the whole United Kingdom.
Andrew Bowie. A list of Tories getting things wrong would never be complete without him on it. He probably couldn't hear the UK Government's correction over those klaxons. This was retweeted by MSPs Liam Kerr and Miles Briggs.
6:
The UK Gov has again reacted quickly to protect jobs. English firms can apply for up to £9k per property.
— Maurice Golden MSP (@mgoldenmsp) January 5, 2021
Scotland will receive £375m. I hope the SNP guarantees every penny will be spent immediately to help businesses cope with the new lockdown. https://t.co/HQb5q5hpQM
Maurice Golden doesn't say the money is "additional" or "extra" as the others did, but he probably thought it. Miles Briggs also shared this which puts him in the lead with four retweets.
7:
Good work by the Chancellor. The SNP must use this funding, not sit on it and then claim the UK Government isn't going enough. https://t.co/v5gkqZTLn4
— Stephen Kerr (@RealStephenKerr) January 5, 2021
Stephen Kerr may not be an MP anymore, but, well that's it. The former representative for Stirling wasn't retweeted by any of his colleagues.
8:
🇬🇧 The UK Government is providing the Welsh Labour Government with extra funding to help support jobs and businesses through the weeks ahead. pic.twitter.com/etCqg7Q0aD
— Welsh Conservatives (@WelshConserv) January 5, 2021
Bonus round. Just in case you thought it was only Scotland subjected to this Tory spin, the Welsh Conservatives were at it too.
This crucial funding from the UK Government will help businesses and jobs across Wales.
— Paul Davies MS/AS (@PaulDaviesPembs) January 5, 2021
The funding needs to reach businesses without delay. pic.twitter.com/i96IGj0qQh
That's the Conservative leader in the Senedd Paul Davies, proving Tories are the same all over the UK.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
