WHILE pro-Trump extremists caused chaos and violence in Washington DC last night, two staunch Unionist Twitter accounts pinned their focus on Nicola Sturgeon and Scottish independence.

The violence in the Capitol has left four people dead – with one protester being shot by police and three dying of “medical emergencies”. Some 52 people have been arrested, most of them for breaking the 6pm curfew set by the city’s mayor during the chaos.

The pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol after the president gave a speech saying he would never concede and falsely claiming the election had been rigged.

The mob, in which many people were armed, broke windows and doors to enter the building, shouting “stop the steal” and attempting to stop lawmakers from certifying Joe Biden’s election win.

A pipe bomb was reported on Capitol grounds while there was an armed stand off at the door of the House.

The National:

At 8.34pm, amid the violence, anti-independence campaigners The Majority wrote on Twitter: “You can just tell that any time soon, Sturgeon's going to give us a lecture on democracy.”

At 8.13pm UK time – after the protesters had broken their way inside the Capitol building – Scottish Labour’s Ian Smart wrote: “A facist [sic] rabble is a facist rabble. Unless it is a Scottish facist  rabble. Whereupon it becomes ‘civic and joyous’.”

The blogger has previously been in trouble for his “unacceptable” Twitter behaviour.

Paul Sinclair, former chief adviser to Scottish Labour leader Johann Lamont, commented: "Curiously dressed men ... waving flags ... claiming to be patriots ... demanding a recount ... saying the mainstream media is biased ... Only in America? I think it happens closer to home than that."

The SNP have been contacted for comment.
