THE SNP have published their long-awaited Plan B proposal for a second referendum, sparking widespread debate among the Yes movement.

We asked our readers to get involved and the response has been incredible.

Launched by Cabinet Secretary Michael Russell, the SNP’s plan is to seek a Section 30 order from Boris Johnson. If the request is rejected, the Scottish Government will push ahead with legislation in Holyrood to hold a new referendum.

This is what some of our readers make of the proposal.

AS an avid and passionate supporter of independence for Scotland and indeed, hopefully, in my lifetime a Scottish republic, I am extremely impressed with the 11-point plan that the SNP are due to put forward. It’s clearly well thought out and has taken a lot of time and effort to put something on the table as assertive as this.

The feeling seems to be that the indy movement is like an unstoppable high-speed train. The stars are aligning right before us for our country to return to the independent state that it should always have been. We are, I believe, nearly there. I’ve never been so convinced as I am now that it’s our time.

The greatest concern I have however is that right now our own worst enemy might well be ourselves. From infighting to the Alex Salmond case to the long game and the need for things to move faster. We actually threaten to implode just as things are about to reach the goal that some of us have made our whole life goal. Somebody needs to get the Salmonds, the Sturgeons, the Blackfords and all the key individuals that have brought us to the cusp of what is something very very special together in a room and bang their hands together. We all share the same goal.

The National: Alex Salmond

We are so very close. Don’t let these divisions deviate from the greater goal. These can be sorted out after independence and you can scratch each other’s eyes out then. Now is not the time for that. Don’t let it kill the dream. You will all regret it for the rest of your lives.

HAVING read and studied The Art of War, any talk of a Plan B significantly weakens the drive for Scottish independence and should be avoided at all costs.

This does not mean that eventually a Section 30 would be required to gain independence just don't talk about it right now.

I'D like to turn this next election into an independence referendum and if not don’t give them any clue and set a date ASAP .

THE paper is basically saying to the English nationalist Government at Westminster “put up or shut up”.

Whether the current case before the Court of Session finds for or against the plaintive, Mr Keatings, on the issue of where Scottish sovereignty lies may or may not be helpful, the SNP has now drawn a line in the sand, one the Scottish electorate will hold them to.

I am happy to have a hard EU border from Gretna to Berwick. The compensation will be a return to normal borderless relations, exchanges and trade with our EU friends and business who, as the last few weeks have demonstrated, we rely on.

THE Scottish Government should have passed legislation to make the referendum legal under Scots law before making their plans known. They should do so ASAP otherwise Westminster will introduce a bill to make it illegal for Scots parliament to do so. A huge mistake by the SNP.

HAVING just begun to find out all the implications of Brexit I would advise against any decision to keep our cards under the table. People would simply wonder what you are trying to hide.

Making the election about independence would not win over the Remainers without detail about the way ahead. They need coherent argument backed by facts. Soundbites won't do it and in the current climate it is difficult to reach people other than by flyers which are binned without thought. Media coverage will naturally be limited by bias and I can only see a very difficult job ahead. I so much want independence in my lifetime and wish I could be more positive.

Helen Brough

I DO not support the plan B idea. Supporting this could well loose our chances of independence for 50 years.

The fantastic polls that currently show such support for indyref2 have been generated in no small part by the outstanding leadership of our First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon. Why on earth do people want to go against her carefully crafted leadership. The AUOB marches are great for Yes supporters but do little to generate the majority we need.

The National:

The English nationalists should have lost the last referendum in 2014 but came up with the "Vow" which scuppered our independence dreams. The English nationalists are already preparing their plans. The Saltire is being replaced on packaging by the Union Flag; we are told every day that it is the largesse of Westminster that is funding Covid business support and the provision of the vaccines; we do not have an agreed currency; Alister Jack is preparing to run an English nationalist office in Edinburgh to undermine Holyrood; there are plans to bypass Holyrood for capital spending in Scotland; our tax raising powers are restricted to income tax which means that any increase has a disproportionate effect on the money in our pocket.

We all need to pull together under the SNP in both the constituency and the regional seats. We must get a big SNP majority at Holyrood to ensure we have a referendum. My view is that we should seek to join EFTA within 18 months to ensure free trade and freedom of movement. It will take longer to establish our currency and finalise our membership of the EU. Once that is all done other political groupings can develop if that is what people want. We are so close to winning so please do not destroy that chance by splintering a unified vote at the election.

Remember the Tories have huge treasure chests and control the majority of the media. They will use any chink in our unified armour to destroy us.

Charles W Duthie

I BELIEVE in keeping powder dry as long as possible, as Boris and his minions would immediately start working to block Plan B the moment it was known. I see no reason, however, why there could not be an “advisory” referendum at the same time as the election – two ballot papers. Some folk might want to vote for independence but not SNP, or vice versa, and this would keep the votes specific, and perhaps even double the impact.

THROUGH the Declaration of Arbroath, it is declared that the People of Scotland are sovereign. This fact was re-established in The House of Commons at Westminster in 2019.

The National: Those behind the new Declaration of Arbroath must surely be aware that many supporters of an independent Scotland were born elsewhere

Martin Keatings is, as I write, in the process of making it even more clear that we are a sovereign nation and as such, we have complete authority to make our own decisions.

In my capacity as member of the Scottish National Party, I feel sad and betrayed by the way the SNP have missed so many open goals which should have secured at least the inevitability of our independence.

I am angry that you keep asking WM for the permission to exercise our sovereignty.

Obviously, the SNP has no choice but to make the May election synonymous with the mandate (yet another) for independence.
