DON'T expect a Tory to be able to explain why Scots can't choose their own future.
And especially not Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross.
At last night's STV leaders debate Ross was asked by host Colin Mackay why the Tories' can't support Covid recovery while planning for an independence referedum at the same time.
Seems a simple enough question. Perhaps Ross could have said one of his usual responses like 2014 was a once in a generation vote, Scotland is too poor or we are stronger as part of the UK?
Instead, Ross answered: "You just can't, Colin."
The response prompted memes from across the political spectrum.

No one can accuse Douglas Moray of being a great thinker! 🤣#STVdebate #SP2021 #indyref2 #Covid19
Later in the debate Nicola Sturgeon asked Ross if he just does “whatever the UK Government says”. He responded by warning her against “picking fights”.
It seems even the Tories can't find a reason for us to stay in the Union any longer..
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
