A “DIGITAL highway” capable of carrying ultrafast internet is to be created across the Forth Road Bridge.

Openreach Scotland engineers will use a giant air compressor today to blow a 3km stretch of glass fibre across the bridge at speeds of up to 60 metres per minute. The new fibre cable will provide gigabit-capable internet services to thousands of residents and businesses in South Queensferry. A further 2km of fibre have been build to the bridge’s north approach, linking back to Inverkeithing.

Openreach Scotland’s board chairwoman Katie Milligan said today marks a “once-in-a-generation engineering task”.

“It’s great to see the iconic Forth Road Bridge play a part in a new, digital era which, like the bridge itself, will serve Scotland for generations,” she said.
