A SCOTS university is aiming to address the skills and knowledge gap in the UK’s rapidly growing space sector with the launch of a postgraduate degree programme in planetary sciences.

Students at the University of Aberdeen’s new MSc Planetary Science will study Earth, moon, and planetary sciences, along with the technology that helps us understand the processes that form them.

The interdisciplinary programme starts in September and will give students an informed understanding of planetary atmospheres and landforms, space environment and remote sensing, as well as data analysis, astrobiology, and space systems engineering and instrumentation.

It has been designed and will be delivered by the university’s ground-breaking Planetary Sciences Group, which is part of current and future missions to Mars.

The multi-disciplinary group was recruited to Aberdeen’s Department of Geosciences last year, and underlines the ambitions of the university’s long-term Aberdeen 2040 strategy, with its emphasis on research into solving real-world challenges.

It has developed an instrument called HABIT (HabitAbility: brine, irradiation and temperature), funded by the UK Space Agency, which will, amongst other things, produce liquid water on Mars to support future exploration of the planet.

This is scheduled to go to Mars next year, in the ExoMars mission.

Group leader Professor Javier Martin-Torres said the university is perfectly placed to be delivering such a course, given the rapid growth of the space industry in Scotland and the UK.

“We live in the golden age of space, and solar system exploration, with unprecedented collaboration and investment between governments and space agencies for Moon and Mars exploration, and there is a growing interest in the industry sector to participate in solar system exploration,” he said.

“The next ambitious plans for the following decade include sending humans back to the moon, establishing a colony on Mars, probing Venus’s atmosphere and geology, searching for life near Saturn, sending missions to probe the metal core of a dead planet, and exploring the hidden ocean on Jupiter's moon Europa.

“The science and technology challenges that will be covered by the future generations require an interdisciplinary approach.

“The purpose of this new degree programme is to provide an overview of state-of-the-art planetary research and technologies, and it incorporates training on the main technological challenges that must be considered in deep space exploration.

“This MSc is mainly for people driven by curiosity that would like to follow an academic or research path, but it is also very good for people that would like to enter the fast-growing market of space-related companies. It aims to engage students from across traditional science disciplines on space and planetary science, building new [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] STEM skills based on its interdisciplinary nature.”

The latest industry survey – Size & Health of the UK Space Industry 2020 – showed Scotland is now home to 173 space organisations, supporting approximately a fifth of the 126,300 jobs across the UK supply chain.

Spaceport Scotland is an initiative by people, companies, and organisations in the north which aims to stimulate interest in the possible use of a Scottish location for the UK's first operational spaceport.

Dr Dave Muirhead, head of the university’s School of Geosciences, described the new course as “an incredible new development for the School and the university”, which would appeal to students from a broad range of science backgrounds, including geology, biology, physics, and engineering planetary science.

“For students with a science background, this MSc will provide the needed spacecraft design and engineering exposure,” he added.

“At the same time, it will encourage an appreciation for space science and research, and the supporting technologies for robotic and human space exploration and instrumentation.”
