RISHI Sunak was confronted by a climate activist who called on the Chancellor to make the environment his top priority.

The Green New Deal Rising group - that previously confronted First Minister Nicola Sturgeon over the Cambo oil field - posted the video of activist Fatima calling on the Chancellor to make the climate his priority.

The climate activism group says that it will continue to challenge politicians and hold them to account until there is a proper plan to combat climate change.

In the video posted to Twitter, activist Fatima is heard telling Sunak that he needs to "invest in a green economy" as it appears he is "blocking action on climate change".

Sunak tells the activist to look at Boris Johnson's "fantastic" 10-point plan but is told that there is "no plan to meet net-zero" carbon emissions and that his government is approving new coal mines.

Earlier this year, the Tories approved the first coal mine in 30 years saying that it would create hundreds of jobs for the Cumbria area of England.

The UK Government's Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution was published in November 2020 with commitments to create up to 250,000 green jobs but has no significant point on net-zero, only that the aim is to have net-zero emissions by 2050.

Sunak states in the video that the plan has £12 billion of investment into green projects, but UK Business Secretary and COP26 president Alok Sharma later admitted that just £4bn of the plan was new money, with the rest coming from existing commitments.

Fatima also confronted Sunak over the UK Government's £27bn investment in new roads, to which the Chancellor said they are "investing billions of pounds in rolling out electric charging infrastructure". The 10-point plan states there is £1.3bn earmarked for electric vehicle charging points.

Fatima states "I am terrified about my future" and criticised the Chancellor for not doing enough to invest in a green economy that could create "millions of green new jobs".

As Fatima asks about flooding the activist appears to be blocked by Sunak's staff as he waves and says with a smile: "It was really nice to meet you."

Fatima then says: "No I don't think you're doing enough and you seem to be running away and that's really sad.

"This should be your priority."

Green New Deal Rising later tweeted: "With the government spending 27bn on road building, even 12bn - on our ENTIRE future - is peanuts.

"And the Tories call themselves climate leaders? We’re not buying it, and we’re sick of being lied to."
