THE SNP have slammed Douglas Ross for "utter hypocrisy" as the Scottish Tory leader campaigns against vaccine passports in Scotland despite similar plans by the UK Government to implement them in England.

Ross, who is both an MSP and an MP, has called the Holyrood plans a "total shambles".

MSPs are set to vote on the use of Covid vaccine certificates today with both Scottish Labour, the LibDems and Scottish Tories saying they will vote against the measure.

Speaking on BBC Politics Live today, SNP MP Alison Thewliss said: “I think it’s utter hypocrisy from Douglas Ross. Absolutely astonishing.

“He’s a member of the [UK] Government benches in the Parliament that we sit in and he’ll be asked to vote for it and he’s campaigning against it in Scotland.

"It’s utter hypocrisy from him, it’s absolutely wild.”

If the measure is passed in Scotland, it will mean Scots will have to show proof of vaccination on entry to nightclubs, indoor live events with 500+ people unseated, outdoor live events with 4000+ people unseated and any event with 10,000+ people.

Those who have had two vaccines can already download or get a paper copy of a certificate with a QR code.

And by the end of the month it's expected the code will also be available on a new NHS Scotland Status app.

A similar scheme is being set up by the Tories in England, with those in the country having to prove their Covid status to get into nightclubs from September.

The UK Government has so far not released many details on the plan but said it will publish them soon.

The Scottish Conservatives have been contacted for comment.
