SCOTLAND has recorded almost 6000 new Covid cases in 24 hours as the number of people admitted to hospital continues to grow, according to the latest data.
There were 5912 new cases reported in the most recent daily figures released by the Scottish Government which represent 11.5% of the 55,646 new tests for the coronavirus that reported results.
This means Scotland had a test positivity rate of more than double the 5% threshold which the World Health Organisation says indicates that the virus is under control.
The new cases show a rise of more than 1000 on the previous day's figure when 4298 was the figure recorded on Saturday.
There were no new deaths reported in the latest daily data of people who tested positive for Covid-19. This means that the total toll under the daily measure remains at 8242.
It is noted that registration offices are generally closed at weekends.
The number of coronavirus patients in Scottish hospitals hit its highest level since late February in the data shown in yesterday's report and the number has continued to rise.
Yesterday, there were 1019 people were in hospital with recently confirmed Covid-19, a rise of 34 on the day before. Of those people, 88 were in intensive care, an increase of five.
In terms of Scotland's vaccine effort, 4,140,616 people have now received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 3,777,461 have received a second jag.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
