The National:

FOR anyone in any doubt as to whether the Tories value money or people's lives more highly, the Prime Minister has made it clear.

Speaking on the BBC on Friday night, Boris Johnson probably let slip a little more than he intended.

Enraged at the journalist asking questions about trivial things such as people's health, Johnson raged: "I've given you the most important metric... never mind life expectancy, never mind cancer outcomes, look at wage growth."

The short clip was leapt on by opposition politicians, with the SNP's Ian Blackford writing: "Every citizen should see this insight into the thinking of our PM.

"It does not have to be this way for Scotland, we have an alternative to this man who is literally prepared to sacrifice our health."

Labour MP Peter Dowd commented: "There were more than 166,000 cancer deaths in the UK annually (2016/18) - 77,800 women & 89,000 men. That’s 450 every day, one person every four minutes & one person in four dying from cancer but 'never mind cancer outcomes look at wage growth'.

"Barbaric!"

Commentator Owen Jones added: "The man who said 'let the bodies pile high' now says 'I've given you the most important metric which is, never mind life expectancy, never mind cancer outcomes, look at wage growth.'

"Boris Johnson is a man with total contempt for human life."

Not all human life though, he's quite fond of himself.
