THE massive exercise to distribute one million copies of a pro-independence newspaper is under way – and we want to hear from those giving them out.
The National has teamed up with Believe in Scotland (BIS) and the SNP to produce and distribute an eight-page special.
With contributions from First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, BIS founder Gordon MacIntyre-Kemp and more, the newspaper focuses on making the case for independence from a wellbeing perspective.
We had two presses printing 40,000 copies an hour to make sure the papers were ready for a huge distribution exercise that begins today.
Most of the copies will be going to SNP branches that had previously submitted numbers of how many they’d like to receive.
If you’re one of the groups who will be handing out the newspapers, The National wants to hear from you.
If you have pictures or videos from the event, or even just some quotes about what you’ve been seeing on doorsteps handing them out, we’d love to receive them.
You can do so by getting in touch with stewart.ward@thenational.scot via email.
The collaboration follows another between The National and BIS in September.
A 24-page supplement on why a vote for independence is a must for Scotland was sent out to Yes groups across the country.
That was part of a day of action that kick-started BIS’s Autumn of Indy Action.
This latest eight-page newspaper addresses topics such as pensions, what COP26 told us about the Union and the management of Scotland’s economy. It also includes a special offer to receive access to an e-copy of Scotland The Brief – which has key facts and figures supporting independence.
The full supplement will be printed in a 48-page edition of The National on Saturday, November 20.
National editor Callum Baird said: “The National is Scotland’s pro-independence newspaper – and that means we want to do whatever we can to use our resources to support the Yes cause.
“Whether that’s our Yessay contest, billboard campaigns, supporting days of action or this latest campaign – we want to offer our help.
“A quick glance at social media will show you how riled Unionists are about our plan to publish one million pro-Yes papers.
“They know which way the momentum is going, and can see all the efforts being made by Yessers to get ourselves in the best place we can be for indyref2.
“We’re excited to see the next stage of this process take shape – as the papers go from our print centre out to the groups.
“It’s been a fantastic effort from everyone involved so far, and we hope those handing out the papers get a great response and ultimately some new converts!”
The printing of the eight-pager uses recycled paper – as The National does.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
