THERE are calls for more Scottish Conservative MPs to speak out over the alleged Christmas party in Downing Street since a leaked video showed No10 staff joking about a festive gathering.

The footage, uncovered by ITV, shows a senior aide joking about a potentially illegal party during the December 2020 lockdown.

There have been calls for Boris Johnson to resign while Labour has called for Johnson to apologise.

The Prime Minister has repeatedly denied hosting such a party but increasing evidence of one has come to light.

Opposition politicians have compared the Conservative's response to when Nicola Sturgeon failed to wear a mask inside a pub in December last year to its response to those in the UK Government allegedly breaking lockdown rules.

The Scottish Conservatives' Twitter account in December 2020 tweeted the front page of the Sun showing the First Minister not wearing a mask, saying: "The First Minister should know better.

"By forgetting the rules and failing to set a proper example, she’s undermining essential public health messaging.

"There cannot be one rule for Nicola Sturgeon and another for everyone else."

On Wednesday, SNP MP Pete Wishart replied to the tweet: "The Conservatives a year ago.

"The Conservatives today - ‘no one from the Conservative Party is available for interview this morning’..."

Scottish Constitution Minister Angus Robertson encouraged the Scottish Tories to show "leadership" during the scandal.

He tweeted: "It normally doesn’t take very long to hear loud moral outrage from @Douglas4Moray and @ScotTories.

"Have any of them shown any leadership yet on the Downing St party and Boris Johnson lies?"

But shortly after a tense Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday, Scottish Tory leader Ross took to challenge the Prime Minister.

Ross said: "Clearly what we have seen over the last 12 hours or so with the video emerging, there are serious questions that need to be answered.

"Now looking at what I have seen, there was a party of sorts.

"I don’t think you can get away from that, and there are questions to be answered on why that was allowed as it was absolutely against the guidance this time last year."

He continued: "That's why I think there are serious questions to be answered around what happened this time last year and what has happened in the last week as the Prime Minister has been answering questions in the House of Commons.

"There was a party of sorts. I wasn’t involved, I wasn’t invited, I wasn’t there, but just look at what we have seen since then – there was a party of sorts and that was against the guidance last year."

Several Tory MPs in England have expressed their fury at the UK Government, with senior figures in the party calling for an independent investigation.

Veteran Conservative MP Roger Gale led the Tory backlash, declaring that the situation bore “all the hallmarks of another ‘Barnard Castle’ moment” – a reference to the Prime Minister’s former aide driving 260 miles during strict lockdown conditions last year.

“No 10 clearly has some serious questions to answer. Fast,” the North Thanet MP tweeted.

Meanwhile, A former minister told the Telegraph: "It’s a disaster and some extreme humble pie needs to be eaten.

"I am absolutely furious because we’ve been trying to make the best of it on the basis of assurances and this kind of thing just can’t happen."

Despite the outrage south of the Border, Tory MPs in Scotland have so far failed to speak out.

However, former Tory MSP Adam Tomkins on Wednesday said: "It is one of the fundamentals of who we are that the same rules apply to the governed and the government alike.

"That it is so-called conservatives who appear to have lost sight of this is beyond contemptible."

The UK Government's Scottish Secretary Alister Jack on Monday denied being at any Downing Street Christmas party, saying he "wasn't invited".

Asked about it at the Scottish Affairs Committee by Wishart, he said: “I’m very confident that I wasn’t at any Christmas parties at Number 10.

“I wasn’t there, I can assure you that I wasn’t there.”

The Scottish Secretary went on to say he was “confident” in his response because he “wasn’t asked to any”.

Speaking about the leaked press conference video, John Swinney said it showed the "contempt" Downing Street has for the public.

The Deputy First Minister said: "That video last night is just one of the most appalling things I have seen in my political life.

"It shows contempt at the heart of Downing Street for members of the public, and that is exactly what you do not need at a time of national emergency and of the gravity that we face."

Scottish Greens MSP Gillian Mackay said: “The behaviour of Boris Johnson and his government continues to be utterly appalling. At a time of national crisis not only did those in his inner circle breach the very rules they had set down for the public, they’ve continually lied about it, and now footage shows them laughing about it while planning their excuses.

“This is not a laughing matter to the thousands of us who have lost a loved one during the pandemic, or to all those who were separated from family and friends because they followed the rules. Johnson’s time as Prime Minister will forever be tainted by lies, sleaze and corruption. It is time for him to resign and bring an end to this whole sorry episode.

“The failure of the supine Scottish Tories to publicly criticise the actions of Johnson and his cabal will come as a surprise to no one.”
