THE ordering of lateral flow tests on the UK Government website has been temporarily suspended amid “exceptionally high demand”, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has said.
The website on Monday advised people to “try again later” or to book a coronavirus test site appointment instead.
The UKHSA said the pause is temporary and availability refreshed daily, with people encouraged to re-visit the website from Tuesday.
In Scotland, where First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has warned of a “tsunami” of cases approaching, members of the public are being encouraged to take regular tests before socialising – while the country’s vaccine passport scheme allows people to present proof of a negative test to enter some venues like nightclubs and large concerts.
MPs at Westminster are being asked to back a similar scheme on Tuesday. Also on Tuesday in England, fully vaccinated contacts of a Covid-19 case are being asked to take daily lateral flow tests for seven days to help slow the spread.
Journalists at The National attempted to order lateral flow testing kits via the UK Government’s official website on Monday morning but were unable to.
Instead the website showed a message reading: “There are no more home tests available.
“Sorry, there are no more home test kits available right now.
“Try again later.
“Or, you can go back and try to book a test site appointment instead.”

Lateral flow kits are also stocked in local pharmacies.
There appeared to be no problems with the availability of PCR home test kits.
Speaking after the news emerged, the Prime Minister said there was a “ready supply” of lateral flow tests.
Boris Johnson was asked about the supply and told broadcasters: “They can get those tests, we do have a ready supply of lateral flow tests.
“If you can’t get one online for any reason, then there are ample supplies in the shops. But what I think, if I may say so, what that also shows is that people are doing the sensible thing, and getting tests as well.”
Meanwhile, Scotland's Health Secretary said talks are underway to secure supplies.
"We're in ongoing discussions with UK Govt urging them to resolve issues around ordering LFD test kits," Humza Yousaf said.
"Reminder, you can use link below to enter your postcode & find local sites where LFDs can be picked up. Check ahead where possible, demand will be high."
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
