THERE are 23 MSPs, nearly a fifth of the parliamentary cohort, who are landlords or own shares in letting companies.

But who are they, how much money do they make each year and how many properties do they own?

SCOTTISH TORIES

The National:

Alexander Burnett, Aberdeenshire West (Constituency)

Properties: Unknown, Burnett is a trustee of both the Fordie Trust, valued at £5.5m, and the Banchory Trust, valued at £15.3m, both of which own property in Aberdeenshire. 

Estimated income: Combined, both trusts' gross annual income is between £390,002 and £460,000. Burnett states he doesn’t expect any income from them.

Shares or investments in letting companies: Yes, Director and Chairman of North Banchory Company Limited, property development and letting company. Burnett doesn't take a salary, but receives private medical insurance worth £2000 per year through the firm. 

The National:

Liam Kerr, North East Scotland (Region)

Properties: A flat in Edinburgh, estimated value £150,001 - £200,000.

Estimated income: £5000 to £10,000 per year.

Shares or investments in letting companies: No.

The National:

Donald Cameron, Highlands and Islands (Region)

Properties: Achnacarry Estate, Lochaber, includes residential property lets, valued at £8.5 million.

Estimated income: £840,000 per year.

Shares or investments in letting companies: No.

The National:

Edward Mountain, Highlands and Islands (Region)

Properties: 14 - eight cottages, three houses, two farmhouses and one croft in Moray.

Estimated income: £80,000 per year. Mountain says he does not receive income from four properties, and three are under “service occupancy”. The remaining seven are estimated to produce income of between £10,000 and £15,000 per year each. 

Shares or investments in letting companies: Yes, partner in Delfur Farms Farming Partnership, of Moray, a “farming business with ancillary residential lettings”.

The National:

Murdo Fraser, Mid Scotland and Fife (Region)

Properties: Two flats in Edinburgh; one a half flat share, valued at £100,000 - £150,000, the other valued at £300,000 to £400,000. 

Estimated income: £20,000 per year.

Shares or investments in letting companies: No.

The National:

Craig Hoy, South Scotland (Region)

Properties: Part share in two flats; one in Edinburgh and one in Midlothian, both valued between £100,000 and £150,000. Previously had a third flat share in East Lothian but ceased interest in November 2021. 

Estimated income: £10,000 - £20,000 per year. 

Shares or investments in letting companies: No.

The National:

Dr Sandesh Gulhane, Glasgow (Region)

Properties: One jointly-owned flat in Glasgow, estimated value of £250,000 - £300,000.

Estimated income: £10,000 to £15,000 per year. 

Shares or investments in letting companies: No.

The National:

Finlay Carson, Galloway and West Dumfries (Constituency)

Properties: Unknown. Carson is a partner in J and F Carson, a farming and property letting partnership in Kirkcudbright. 

Estimated income: £13,000 per year.

Shares or investments in letting companies: Yes.

The National:

Pam Gosal, West Scotland (Region)

Properties: One house in Glasgow, valued between £400,000 and £500,000, but Gosal says she receives no rental income from the home. She owns 50% shares in Strathblane Developments Ltd and APCL Trading Ltd, a property investment and letting firm. 

Estimated income: Gosal’s shares in the firm have an estimated market value of £700,000.

Shares or investments in letting companies: Yes. 

SNP

The National:

Michelle Thomson, Falkirk East (Constituency)

Properties: Six. Three houses - one each in Edinburgh, Stirling and Argyll and Bute. Three flats - one each in Clackmannanshire, West Lothian and Edinburgh.

Estimated income: £30,000 per year. 

Shares or investments in letting companies: Yes, sole trader of Thomson Holdings, a property investment company.

The National:

Colin Beattie, Midlothian North and Musselburgh (Constituency)

Properties: One flat in Edinburgh, valued £150,000 - £200,000

Estimated income: £10,000 - £15,000 per year. 

Shares or investments in letting companies: No, but owns 50% share in Ben Sheann Enterprises Limited, a firm buying and selling real estate firm. 

The National:

Annabelle Ewing, Cowdenbeath (Constituency)

Properties: One flat in Edinburgh, valued between £200,001 and £250,000.

Estimated income: £10,001 - £15,000 per year.

Shares or investments in letting companies: No. 

The National:

Fergus Ewing, Inverness and Nairn (Constituency)

Properties: One house in Lossiemouth, valued between £150,001 and £200,000

Estimated income: £5,000 per year. 

Shares or investments in letting companies: No. 

The National:

Kenneth Gibson, Cunninghame North (Constituency)

Properties: One flat in Glasgow, valued between £100,001 and £150,000.

Estimated income: £5000 per year, but Gibson states that costs associated with the property “exceed the income from letting it”. 

Shares or investments in letting companies: No. 

The National:

Michael Matheson, Falkirk West (Constituency) and Cab Sec for Net Zero, Energy and Transport.

Properties: One house, jointly owned with his wife, in the Highlands, valued between £150,001 and £200,000.

Estimated income: £10,001 - £15,000. Matheson adds that the property doesn’t make a profit due to “running costs”. 

Shares or investments in letting companies: No. 

The National:

Ivan McKee, Glasgow Provan (Constituency) and Minister for Business, Trade, Tourism and Enterprise

Properties: One house in Stirlingshire, valued between £500,001 and £600,000.

Estimated income: £10,001 and £15,000 per year. 

Shares or investments in letting companies: Yes, 50% ordinary share in EISM Properties Ltd, residential letting firm. 

The National:

Paul McLennan, East Lothian (Constituency)

Properties: One house in Dunbar, East Lothian, valued at £150,001 and £200,000, which he rents to his parents-in-law.

Estimated income: £5000 per year.

Shares or investments in letting companies: No. 

SCOTTISH LABOUR

The National:

Jackie Baillie, Dumbarton (Constituency)

Properties: One flat in Portugal, valued between £50,001 and £100,000. 

Estimated income: Between £3500 and £5200 per year.

Claire Baker, Mid Scotland and Fife (Region)

Properties: One flat in Aberdeen, jointly owned with her husband, valued between £100,001 and £150,000. 

Estimated income: £5000 per year.

Properties: One sixth of a house share on the Isle of Lewis, valued between £100,001 and £150,000.

Properties: One flat in Edinburgh, his own, which he sublets part of on AirBnB.

SCOTTISH GREENS

The National:

Out of the Greens seven MSPs and Presiding Officer Alison Johnstone, the party has no landlords.
