The National:

MICHAEL Russell has led the charge against the “spectacular ignorance” of Scotland demonstrated by one Brexiteer commentator on social media.

Robert Kimbell, who is apparently the former leader of the “Time Party” (we haven’t heard of it either), had taken to Twitter to showcase his cluelessness.

Making the intervention in the Scottish independence debate that no-one had asked for, Kimbell wrote: “Orkney and Shetland have both stated they would exit Scotland should Scotland vote in a referendum to leave the United Kingdom.”

They haven’t.

Either way, Kimbell went on: “The Western Isles (Outer Hebrides or Comhairle nan Eilean Siar) have intimated that they could well follow suit too and exit Scotland in that event.”

That news would come as some surprise to the people in the Western Isles (which by the way is called Na h-Eileanan Siar in Scots Gaelic – Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is the local council).

Kimbell’s astounding ignorance did not go unnoticed.

The SNP’s Michael Russell responded: “All untrue and as a bonus he unwittingly demonstrates his spectacular ignorance with regard to one of the places.

“British arrogance and exceptionalism at its worst.”

The National’s Gerry Hassan added: “This is 100% wrong and deliberate disinformation.

“It is an insult to the folk of Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles to just make up stories about them.”

In an interview with Country Squire magazine after launching the Time Party, Kimbell made clear his pro-Brexit views and claimed that he wanted “democracy to be respected”. It would seem unless that democracy votes for Scottish independence, of course.

He also said that he wanted to “secure the legacy of Magna Carta”, whatever that means.
