The National:

IT seems not even the Tory government knows what Jacob Rees-Mogg is any good for.

The newly created Minister for Brexit Opportunities Rees-Mogg got off to a bit of a shaky start when it became apparent he really couldn’t think of any opportunities himself.

To be fair, finding Brexit opportunities is no mean feat. Apparently, so is finding anyone willing to lead the Government’s unit dedicated to identifying them.

Instead of bothering himself about it all, Rees-Mogg just asked the public to do the hard work for him…

Elsewhere, he’s also been given the role of Minister for Government Efficiency, which led him to say he wanted to cut as many as 65,000 civil servants from the public payroll.

However, cutting even that many would still leave the UK with tens of thousands more civil servants than it had before Brexit.

Between finding Brexit opportunities and cutting a bloated civil service, Rees-Mogg seems to have his work cut out for him. Except, it looks like the UK Government isn’t too sure what Rees-Mogg’s work is.

Although it lists the names of his children, wife, and every committee role he’s had at Westminster, the official government page for Rees-Mogg lists a big fat nothing under “responsibilities”.

The National:

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who had his own problems with responsibilities after naming himself Minister for the Union, is also apparently having trouble getting to grips with what exactly Rees-Mogg’s meant to be doing.

Speaking at PMQs on Wednesday, Johnson called his ally the “new Secretary of State for post-Brexit freedoms”.

Although that title is something the Prime Minister just made up, ultimately so is Rees-Mogg’s current one.
