NICOLA Sturgeon has been banned from ever entering Russia as the Kremlin retaliates over UK sanctions.
The First Minister joins a catalogue of UK officials barred from entering the rogue state with Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak also named on the list.
US President Joe Biden was hit with a similar measure from the Kremlin last month.
In a statement, Russia’s foreign ministry said: “London’s unbridled information and political campaign aimed at isolating Russia internationally, creating conditions for containing our country and strangling the domestic economy” were responsible for its decision.
It added: “In essence, the British leadership is deliberately aggravating the situation around Ukraine, pumping the Kyiv regime with lethal weapons and coordinating similar efforts on the part of Nato.”
The full list of UK officials to be barred from Russia is:
- First Minister Nicola Sturgeon
- Prime Minister Boris Johnson
- Chancellor Rishi Sunak
- Home Secretary Priti Patel
- Culture Minister Nadine Dorries
- Foreign Secretary Liz Truss
- Defence Secretary Ben Wallace
- Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab
- Transport Secretary Grant Shapps
- Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng
- Armed Forces Minister James Heappey
- Attorney General Suella Braverman
- Former prime minister Theresa May
The Scottish Government has been contacted for comment.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
