NO further updates on Downing Street fines will be given by police until after the local elections in May, the Met has said.
The force has said that “due to the restrictions around communications” in the pre-election period, no more information will be given as to whether more fines will be issued in relation to lockdown breaches in the Prime Minister’s office.
Fines may still be issued but the force will not publicly confirm this.
It comes as Boris Johnson faces the prospect of being investigated by MPs into whether he lied to parliament by telling MPs all rules were followed in Downing Street during lockdown – despite more than 50 fines being issued to rule-breakers, including the Prime Minister, his wife and the Chancellor.
MPs are expected to vote on whether to refer Johnson to the privileges committee this afternoon.
Tory MPs have tried to diminish the importance of the fines issued to the Prime Minister and others, comparing them to speeding fines.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: "Whilst the investigation will continue during the pre-election period, due to the restrictions around communicating before the May local elections, we will not provide further updates until after May 5."
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
