RISHI Sunak has denied rumours he had considered resigning and has apologised for breaking Covid rules.

The Chancellor was fined for attending the Prime Minister’s birthday party in Downing Street during lockdown in 2020.

He was subject to rumours he was considering leaving his top post amid the scandal surrounding his wife Akshata Murty claiming non-domicile status to legally avoid paying UK tax on her overseas income.

Revelations around him holding a US green card for more than a year after becoming Chancellor also fuelled speculation he was considering stepping down as removal vans were spotted leaving Downing Street laden with his wife’s possessions as she and his daughters relocated to West London.

Sunak, in Washington for the spring meeting of the IMF, said he respected the decision of the police in fining him for a breach of Covid rules.

“I fully respect the decision that the police have reached,” he told the BBC.

“I paid the FPN notice straightaway and I am extremely and sincerely sorry for the hurt and the anger that this has caused so many people.

“I have always acted, I believe, in good faith in regard to what I said to Parliament.”

Asked if he had considered resigning, he said: “No. I am focused on getting on with the job I have got to do.”
