AROUND seven in every 10 Tory voters disapprove of the tax cuts for the rich brought in by Prime Minister Liz Truss's new UK Government, a poll has found. 

The YouGov poll also showed the Conservative Party have fallen 17 points behind Labour.

Keir Starmer's party's lead over the Conservatives has grown to its largest in more than two decades following the UK Government’s plan to ditch caps on bankers’ bonuses. 

This represents the biggest lead the Labour Party has had since polling began in 2001.

Labour have an approval rating of 45% while Liz Truss’s party trail behind at 28%. 

This marked a decrease of 4% in Tory support whilst Labour’s support had risen by five points. In third place, the LibDems were unchanged at 8%. 

A total of 1730 British adults were surveyed between September 23 and 25 in the YouGov poll commissioned by The Times. It came after Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng announced his controversial mini budget. 

On Sunday and in the wake of Kwarteng's announcement, the pound fell to an all-time low against the US dollar.

The Chancellor was quizzed on the matter whilst on his way to the Treasury offices but refused to offer any comment. 

The poll suggested that voters disapproved of Kwarteng’s tax cuts which included axing the 45p tax rate for top earners.

This particular move was opposed by 72% of respondents to the YouGov survey, including 69% of participants who voted Tory in 2019. 

The plan to lift caps on bankers’ bonuses was rejected by 71% of respondents, including 67% of Tory voters. 

Only 9% of participants believed the measures outlined in the budget would make them better off, while only 15% felt the new economic policies would achieve the aim of stimulating economic growth.

Just 10% of those polled felt Kwarteng was doing a “good job” whilst 68% said the government was managing the economy badly. 

The SNP said the polling showed Truss had "no mandate" for her plans.

SNP MSP Michelle Thomson said: "Liz Truss is strengthening the case for independence with every day she is in office.

"She has absolutely no mandate in Scotland, no mandate across the UK, and her catastrophic budget for the super-rich, which is crashing the Pound and driving the UK economy off a cliff, doesn't even have the support of Tory voters.

"The people of Scotland have given the Scottish Government a cast-iron mandate for an independence referendum, where they have the chance to escape this calamity by building a better, fairer future as an independent country."
