THE National has made the final shortlist in a competition looking to name the best front pages of 2022.
The industry news website Hold the Front Page launched its annual vote to decide the "best regional press front page of 2022” on Monday, with The Sunday National among twelve nominees.
The UK-wide competition counts papers which only run in Scotland – such as The National and its sister paper The Herald – as regional for the contest's sake.

The Sunday National has made the final shortlist for a front page published in February calling on Boris Johnson to resign as prime minister.
Riffing on the popular Wordle trend, the front page read: “Party, liars, shame, leave. Do we have to spell it out, Boris?”

Other regional nominees include the Courier for a front page celebrating Team GB’s curling gold at the winter Olympics, and the Herald’s “Tsar Wars” cover looking at how Vladimir Putin’s aggression could change the world forever.
In England, the Liverpool Echo is nominated for its page covering the murder of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel, and the Manchester Evening News is shortlisted for its reporting of the death of two-year-old Awaab Ishak.
At the time of the Sunday National’s nominated front page, Roxanne Sorooshian was editor. She has since stepped down in order to focus on teaching the next generation of journalists, with Stewart Ward to take over in the role officially from January.
Ward said that it was an “honour to see the Sunday National’s front page alongside other top reporting from across the UK”.
He went on: “It took months and months of scandals and pressure before Boris Johnson was finally forced to quit as Prime Minister, and it’s great to think our front page helped even a little to push him out of office.
“Being recognised on the shortlist is a testament to the hard work the team puts in every day to produce such a high-quality paper – and winning would be the cherry on top.”
He asked people to visit the Hold the Front Page website and cast their vote for the Sunday National.
Ward added: “I look forward to taking over at the helm of the Sunday National in the new year, and hope that we create many more front pages which are as memorable as this one.”
The results of the poll will be announced on January 4.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
