TEMPERATURES across Scotland plummeted on Sunday night and into Monday morning with much of the country experiencing snowfall.

Drivers across Scotland were warned to leave extra time for their Monday morning commute due to icy roads.

A Met Office yellow weather warning is in place across much of the UK until 10am while a more lengthy one for snow and ice covering northern Scotland is in place until the same time on Wednesday.

Temperatures reached as low as minus 3C in Edinburgh while Highland areas of Scotland could see minus 10C.

People have been urged to be careful with overnight sleet leaving behind slippery surfaces which could cause "injuries from slips and falls".

One reader said that there was "snow in East Lothian" while another added that snow inthe Shetland Isles had led to some businesses closing for the day.

Met Office meteorlogist Craig Snell said the cold conditions had moved in from the Arctic over the weekend. 

The rest of the week is predicted to be cold with patchy showers, particularly in northern areas, until temperatures rise at the weekend.
