A lavish coronation doesn’t quite make sense in a cost-of-living crisis, does it?
This weekend, we’re not celebrating an outdated ceremony for a man born into power – we’re giving our readers a special offer to subscribe and support a better Scotland PLUS a special edition 8-page supplement on the monarchy.
By subscribing to our Digital Pack for only 50p for 3 months OR £36 for one year, you'll gain access our special edition 8-page supplement, our alternative coverage of the coronation, and analysis of the already apparent media frenzy.
But act fast, this offer ends at 23:59 on May 7 2023.
Laura Webster, editor of The National, said: "With The National you'll get no puff pieces on this archaic institution. Instead we'll focus on the true cost of the coronation, the dark history of the monarchy in Scotland and how the media seeks to prop up this decaying system.
"Over this weekend there'll be data driven articles exploring the financial excesses of the royal family, their real popularity levels in Scotland and informative analysis on how the monarchy lobbies against and influences our laws.
"So make sure to subscribe and don't miss a beat, as we do what none of the increasingly out-of-touch Unionist media is willing to do."
With your support, we can continue our quality journalism and challenge power.
What’s included:
- Full access to thenational.scot
- The National ad-free app + the digital edition of the daily newspaper
- Save on your weekly shop + more with Reader Rewards
- 50 new puzzles available every week
- Ability to comment and discuss with other readers
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
