ANTI-MONARCHY campaign group Republic has accused the BBC of “losing the plot” over its coverage of King Charles’s cancer announcement.

It was announced on Monday that the King has been diagnosed with a form of cancer and has begun a schedule of regular treatments.

Although he has postponed public duties, Buckingham Palace has said he “remains wholly positive about his treatment”.

However, in a post on Twitter/X on Tuesday evening, campaign group Republic shared an image of the BBC News website which featured a number of stories about King Charles.

The National:

This included a live blog with the headline: “King Charles seen for first time since cancer announcement as Harry visits” alongside a number of other stories including five under the subheading “King Charles’s cancer diagnosis”.

The group said: “The @BBCNews has lost the plot. There was a single announcement. It does not need live updates.

“We don’t need endless stories about it and there are clearly more important things going on in the world.”

On Wednesday, the BBC continued to run a live blog providing updates on the royals following the announcement from Buckingham Palace.

It comes after we told how STV cut its usual Scottish news output in order to show a 90-minute news special on the King’s cancer diagnosis.

The broadcaster did not show its usual STV News at Six programme on Monday, instead broadcasting an extended UK-wide news programme focused on the monarchy.

A spokesperson for STV said their decision to ditch the Scottish-focused news programme entirely was made because the news of Charles’s diagnosis was “deemed to be of national importance”.

“The rest of the STV schedule was not impacted, with the late night regional news bulletin and current affairs programme, Scotland Tonight, airing in their usual slots that evening.

“Up-to-date Scottish news is also always available on the STV News website and social channels, including Facebook and TikTok.”

The BBC has been approached for comment.
