A REMEMBRANCE service is being held for the first time to honour all the fishermen who have lost their lives at sea.

The national charity, The Fishermen's Mission (TFM), has announced its first ever National Fishing Remembrance Day service on May 12 at 2.30pm.

The service will be held at Eyemouth Parish Church, Victoria Road, and will be a time for reflection and commemoration of all those who have lost their lives while working in the fishing industry.

TFM released a statement along with the announcement of the service, which read: “While we all grieve, when we lose someone, we love and remember, that special person is never to be lost and forgotten.

“The service allows us to come together to remember those we have lost and ensure their memory lives on.”

The Remembrance Day will be led by Donna Schwarz, mission area officer for south east Scotland from TFM and supported by both reverend Andrew Haddow and reverend Donald Duggan.

The service is expected to last around an hour and there will be light refreshments afterwards.

Ali Godfrey, director of business development for TFM, said: “It is an honour to be part of the National Fishing Remembrance Day.

“Planning and working with our maritime partners at Stella Maris and The Seafarers’ Charity to bring this important day together.”

Founded in 1881 TFM is the only national charity that works solely to support both active and former fishermen as well as their dependents.

It is intended that the service will be held every year and that other locations will be added in the coming years.
