A FORMER SNP MP who defected to the Tories has failed to win selection for an English seat at the upcoming General Election.
In October, Lisa Cameron – who was then the SNP MP for East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow – announced her defection to the Conservative Party.
She claimed there had been a “toxic” culture in the SNP’s Westminster group and entirely reversed her previously expressed support for independence.

“To be honest with you, I feel absolutely exhausted by nationalism,” she said.
“I feel like Scotland’s exhausted by nationalism and all of our services are exhausted now. It’s become very divisive.”
Cameron had been in the running to become the Tory candidate in the English seat of Wokingham after veteran Tory politician John Redwood, who been the area’s MP since 1987, announced he would be stepping down.
The constituency has been held by the Conservatives since 1950.

However, Cameron’s bid to secure a place on the ballot paper failed after the party chose Lucy Demery to be the candidate instead.
The former SNP MP was eliminated in the first round.
It comes after the Scottish Conservatives failed to list Cameron amongst their MPs on their website more than three months after she defected to the party.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
