A MAN has been arrested for allegedly shouting racist abuse at staff in Edinburgh Waverley station.

British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed a man was taken into custody on Sunday, August 11 after an alleged incident of racial abuse towards London North Eastern Railway (LNER) staff.

Officers chased down the man before he was arrested.

A BTP East Scotland post on X/Twitter read: “Yesterday officers were alerted to a male who had racially abused LNER staff at Edinburgh Waverley station.

“Male identified and arrested after a short chase.

“We do not tolerate this type of behaviour and will deal with those involved appropriately.”

Between 2023 and 2024 the total number of police charges in Scotland reported containing at least one element of hate crime was 5,992.

This was a 1.5% increase from 2022-23 figures according to the Crown Office Prosecutor Fiscal Service.
