A SCOTTISH airport has welcomed a new route to an island known for its “world-class” beaches.

Edinburgh Airport has hailed the new winter route to Gran Canaria launched by easyJet, The Herald reports.

Flights are due to begin in December to the island which is also known for its architecture, landscape and culture.

The airport described the destination as “the most epic and diverse of the Canary Islands with its stunning scenery and dramatic terrain”.

It said: "World class beaches are a given, but Gran Canaria is also a dream for hikers with lush green mountains to explore.

"One of the island's most popular landmarks is the majestic Roque Nublo, a towering volcanic rock which is protected by Unesco.

"A trip to the top is a must as the reward is some quite spectacular views of the Tejeda mountain."

The airport added: "The charming Old Town of Las Palmas is packed with culture and history. In the centre of the town the Pueblo Canario is a fantastic place to explore with its canary architecture and traditional music and dance displays.

"The buildings are beautiful, the atmosphere is lively, and the food and drink needs no introduction."

Head of aviation at Edinburgh Airport Jonny Macneal told The Herald: "We're always looking to provide alternative options so adding Gran Canaria to our winter sun options with easyJet is really exciting for those passengers that are looking for sun rather than snow over the festive period."
