On Saturday morning, a spokesperson for Tesco said: “Our Greenock Extra is open and trading as normal this morning, after having to close early last night when a vehicle struck the store’s entrance lobby.

"We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience.”

A red vehicle was seen taped off and pictures from the scene in the aftermath of the crash showed the car sitting across the entrance of the store.

The incident took place at around 8.30pm and by around 10.30pm the vehicle was removed from the front of the store.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 8.20pm on Friday, 6 September, 2024, police received a report of a one-vehicle road crash in Dalrymple Street, when a car crashed into a store.

"There was only one occupant of the car and he was taken to hospital. He has since been released.

"A 47-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. He is due to appear at Greenock Sheriff Court on Monday, 9 September 2024.”
